Hobbies keep you young
Hobbies or interests whatever you want to call them it doesn’t matter, what does matter is that we should all have them, especially as we get older and don’t have quite so many things to fill our lives. In fact we need hobbies and interests to keep us from getting bored and uninteresting as well as bringing us pleasure and keeping our brain active.
Most of us will have tried some form of hobby at one time or another even if it was a short lived endeavor. When we don’t stick with something, it’s usually because it’s just not that interesting or important to you. Sometimes it’s just not been the right choice of hobby and other times it may be due to lack of time or money.
Learn what you need to know and enjoy!
Finding a hobby that is a good fit for you should be so much easier now, after all, with the internet it’s easy to research on whatever you’re interested in. If you don’t have the know-how for the hobby you’d like to take up there’s nothing that you can’t learn. The investment required for learning many new skills has become more affordable and available plus the convenience of being able to learn many things in your own home if you want to. An added benefit is that learning on line or by DVD/video this way you often get some of the top professional instructors that you would probably never be able to afford or have access to before.
Remember hobbies should be fun too!
How many hobbies have you tried in the past? When I was a kid I did what many kids were doing at the time and that was building a stamp collection and swapping some with friends. Another favorite of mine back when I was around 8 or 9 years old was making plaster of Paris models in little rubber molds and then painting them. It was always a thrill to remove the rubber mold and to actually find the model intact, whether it was the rabbit’s ears were actually attached to its head, or the model actually had its head or arms attached. Then there were marbles and seeing how many different types and colors you could collect and then try not to lose your favorite marbles either in a game or down the drain.
Those were fun kid things but besides those I took piano lessons, but not for long, as this was to keep my parents happy and not because it was what I wanted to do. No wonder it was so short lived. We would swim, climb trees, play our version of tennis, and roller skate etc. I learned to knit and sew mostly inspired by the fact that I could make some of my own clothes, which was a real plus back then. Money was scarce and new clothes were a luxury that we didn’t get very often. As we get older we leave most of that behind and then what? What hobbies did you have as a child?
A hobby not an obsession
Some people take their hobbies very seriously to the point it becomes more of an obsession. Personally, I don’t know what this is like I can’t think of anything that I’ve been that committed to but I do know people that are so obsessed by their specific hobby or interest that it affects their family. They let it take priority over their family and anything going on within it. Personally I don’t see how this can be healthy and could end up being very destructive. Finding a healthy balance in all areas of life is important.
Do you have a hobby that you enjoy, that brings you pleasure? If you don’t have a hobby already or one that you actually enjoy then maybe it’s time to find one! The important thing is to have fun with it and the best way is to find one that is just right for you. Too often people will decide to take up a hobby that a friend or family member has, but this doesn’t always work. If it’s not your thing you won’t get passionate about it and it could end up that you will start finding excuses not to do it.
The cost of having a hobby
Some hobbies can incur start up costs and some they have ongoing expense so you need to be careful that you don’t invest a lot of money in something that you discover after a few times that it’s not the hobby for you.
Find something that you always wanted to do
As you get older and maybe have more funds available for yourself it’s the perfect time to do something that you’ve always wanted to do, whether it’s to play a guitar like a rock star, take up kayaking, gourmet cooking or ballroom dancing. Perhaps you want to become a better photographer and use that skill to do travel photography or whatever your interests are. The main thing is to have fun and enjoy your special hobby.
