Over 50 –Keep A Young Mindset

Author-Shirley Price

Being over 50 doesn’t mean you are old by any means. We all know that knowledge is power and at no other time have we had so much knowledge at hand than now. Things have changed a

lot regarding the topic of aging especially in more recent years. You don’t have to have that old age mindset, in fact you don’t have to anything…refuse to think and act old.

By the time you reach 50 years of age you have earned the right to be exactly who you want to be. After spending years of trying to fit in and look a certain way it’s time to let it all go and be exactly who you are. This doesn’t mean let yourself go so that you are not taking care of yourself; on the contrary it’s time to really take care of yourself and your needs. It’s time to step up and claim what is rightfully yours-‘Your Life’.

By the time you reach 50 your kids have grown and you may have an empty nest or soon will. You probably also have the knowledge to know how to eat and what to do to be healthy and stay fit. And if you don’t then it’s extremely easy to find out what you do need to know. Keep in mind that there is a big difference between knowing something and actually doing something about it, this is what makes all the difference to getting the results that you want in any area of your life…Action!

You may decide on a makeover, a totally new hairstyle, perhaps a look that you’ve always wanted to try but always thought others would not approve of. After all they are used to the old you, the you that is so familiar and predictable.

Kyaking is for some over 50s

So you know how to stay healthy and fit which means you have so many more opportunities open to you than you would if you have poor health and unable to participate in most activities.
Pick interests and activities that you like to do or have always wanted to try. Pick activities that suit your personality and lifestyle. You may want to explore your adventurous side and try such activities as sky diving, parasailing, and rock climbing. Being adventurous could be taking up rollerblading, kayaking or snowboarding. However, even these types of activities are not going to appeal to a lot of over 50s. The more common pastimes of the over 50s and retirees are to name a few  golf, tennis, or bowling. There are also lots of choices for those that are not into the sporting and outdoor activities such as gourmet cooking,  taking guitar lessons, learning to paint or signing up for some fun dance lesson.

If you have watched the movie ‘The Bucket List’ you’ll probably agree it’s a great movie that has you thinking about your own wish list.  It’s a reminder that if you don’t know what you want you are probably not going to achieve as much.  If you make a list of the things you want to accomplish while you are able you can start to do something about it. You never know when life will change and so will your ability to do some things that you are able to do now.

If traveling is on your bucket list what type of traveling do you want to do? A Safari is the adventure of a lifetime for some, while others would sooner be at a sunny beach resort relaxing around a pool with a margarita and their kindle book reader.

Don’t let the rest of your life pass you by It’s not enough to live half a life. Just because you are over 50 it doesn’t mean that you have to look or act a certain way. Do you ever say to yourself if I only knew then what I know now I’d do things differently?  Remember that when you are 50 and older this is your third chapter in your life and you can write it the way you want it. It’s time to change the old attitudes to what becoming a senior should look like. In fact I have heard some say that it would be a good thing to drop the word senior, it sounds so stereotyped and outdated and I have to agree with that. Many individuals 50 and over look and feel much younger than they did 10 years previous so who wants to be called a senior. It can be a sure way to burst your bubble being called a senior when you are feeling and looking younger than you have in years.

Think about your own bucket list or dream/wish list whatever you want to call it then prioritize those things that you can do now but that you may not realistically be able to do in another 10 – 20 years then it’s time to get started! Good Luck!
